March 2, 2016 – Perch Report and this weekend’s upcoming events!

February is officially over and Minnesota is making it’s way into spring. The days are slowly getting longer and the sun a little stronger. March is a great time to get in on some of Mille Lacs perch action. Anglers are finding hungry fish in both the basin areas, off of deep reef edges, and some of the first deep breaks off shore. Many areas you will have to sort through some small fish to get the nice keepers. Small spoons tipped with wax worms have been productive. Most anglers favor a gold or fire tiger colors. Perch bite best during the day and we have seen the slow down come around 4:00pm.

Angling for Northern Pike is also still open on Mille Lacs until the last Sunday in March. Spearing for pike is now closed. We have seen some nice fish coming out of Isle Bay. Target the weed lines with tip ups and a large shiner or sucker minnow. A great way to spend a warm day on the ice and get that last of the season action in.

This weekend Mille Lacs host several events you won’t want to miss if you are in the area or need a reason for a getaway. Appeldoorn’s will host the annual Fire and Ice BBQ Competition. Teams come from all over preparing delicious food out on the ice. The weather is supposed to be perfect so be sure not to miss out.

The 12th Annual Snowkite Race out of Garrison will also be held on March 5th. 2015’s race had 104 participants. The race goes 14 miles out onto Mille Lacs and 14 miles back for a total of 28 miles. The race generally lasts about two hours and also includes shorter sprint races and freestyle events. You can visit the Mille Lacs Tourism page for more information on the event.

Lots of good reasons to get out in the fresh air this weekend. The nice weather will be the icing on the cake! We do have a few vacancies left. Just give us a call to reserve!
